One of the most common questions we hear from parents is: "When should my child have their first eye exam?" The answer surprises many people, six months old.
The American Optometric Association recommends a baseline exam between 6 and 12 months of age, again at age 3, and then once before kindergarten. After that, annually through the school years.
Why so early? Children's brains and eyes develop together. Issues like crossed eyes, lazy eye, or significant prescription differences between the two eyes are most treatable when caught young.
School vision screenings are helpful but limited. They typically only check distance vision and miss many functional and health issues a comprehensive exam catches.
A pediatric exam at our office is designed to be fun and stress-free. We use age-appropriate testing (no reading required for the little ones!) and take the time kids need to feel comfortable.
If your child squints, sits very close to the TV, complains of headaches, avoids reading, or covers one eye, schedule an exam, those are all worth a closer look.
